How did this come to our attention?

In the beautiful landscapes of Uganda’s Albertine region, our precious chimpanzees face growing threats to their homes and survival. Forests are disappearing, and illegal activities are endangering these magnificent creatures.

The Albertine region has witnessed a severe decline in the natural habitat for chimpanzees due to urban expansion, oil projects, deforestation, increased agriculture, charcoal burning, and illegal settlements. As a result, chimpanzees have been compelled to venture into villages and smallholdings, leading to direct confrontations with the local populace.

The situation has worsened as forced evictions of local agricultural communities have amplified pressures on land availability, exacerbating clashes and violence. Most children in the area can no longer go to school as the Chimps steal and harm them.

We at The Salvare Foundation, are taking a bold step towards rescuing and relocating hundreds of chimpanzees in the Albertine region, whose existence is threatened by escalating conflicts with local communities. The foundation’s mission is to foster conservation and environmental management within the world, aiming to support all fauna and flora conservation projects in the area and collaborate with like-minded organizations.

The primary project goal is to protect and relocate the chimpanzee population, putting an end to the devastating clashes with the local population and providing a sustainable solution for the safety of both humans and chimps.

We have taken up the call to action, working hand in hand with communities to conserve and restore the remnants of chimpanzee forests in the Bunyoro region. One of our mission in this project is: to plant a million trees and provide alternative livelihoods to locals while mitigating the heart-wrenching Human Wildlife Conflict.

Over the past year, in consultation with locals, we’ve documented 18 Human Wildlife Conflict incidents, with injuries to minors and heartbreaking fatalities among them. Villagers have suffered from crop-raiding, facing daily challenges to ensure their safety and sustenance. Despite the brave efforts of organizations like The Chimpanzee Trust, the problems persist and grow, leaving our cherished chimps and communities in danger.

One local school, once a place of joy and learning, now faces a bleak future, losing 50% of its pupils. Roaming groups of dangerous chimps block routes from the villages, attacking lone children. The dreams of these children hang in the balance, yearning for an opportunity to learn without fear.

The Salvare Foundation continues to make important connections in the fields of conservation, animal welfare and eco-conservation tourism.

We recently formed a partnership with The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Honorable Tom R Butime M.P. where it was agreed to work closely to solve some of these urgent issues. The foundation has also approached The Chimpanzee Trust here in Entebbe to work closely together to achieve our joint aims.

We have established our new office with the help of our Head of Albertine Operations Robert, Executive Director of African Centre for Sustainable Alternatives (ACSA), within the grounds of the Palace of His Majesty Omukama Solomon Iguru I, King of Bunyoro, which will serve as our regional headquarters with the vital backing of another important team member The Head of the Albertine Foundation’s initiatives, His Worship Adyeeri Brian Kaboyo, The Mayor of Hoima.
